We often think of “energy poverty’ as a third world issue – and not something affecting us here at home in Ontario. The recent Global News article, Rural Ontarians left in the dark as electricity bills skyrocket, tells a different story. It sheds light on struggling rural residents, right here at home who cannot pay their hydro bills. Ontario’s 100% increase in power bills over the last decade is becoming a real issue for many families. Rural homeowners are especially affected, as they may be subject to much higher delivery charges. It’s a sad state of affairs when Ontario families are forced to choose between electricity and groceries. Power disconnection is becoming a real fear among rural township residents who can’t afford to keep their power on.
